5 reasons to hate the Vista haters

My colleague James Cornelius came up with 5 reasons to hate Windows Vista. Well, I’m a Vista user myself right now (still on RC1, no RTM goodness for me yet), so here’s my comic response to James’ Vista rant.

1. Vista haters are probably fanboys (or fangirls) for Macs, Linux or even Windows XP and probably haven’t even tried Vista yet.

There are plenty of XP users out there screaming their computer is just fine, they have Google Desktop, they can get transparent windows like AERO with some download off the Internet, all the features in Vista can be put into XP with other downloads, is still full of bugs, doesn’t have all the drivers yet, and etc etc blah blah blah.

Or you’re a rabid Mac using zealot who wants to tell the world how Mac OS X already has all the Vista features. Or maybe you’re a Linux user who thinks they’re God’s gift to operating system freedom and flexibility.

Well that’s all hogwash. Vista is a lovely operating system that brings all kinds of nifty features in the one OS, without needing to download and install a zillion free addon programs. Sure, there are still bugs inside but the Windows Update service can fix those. And yes, the ‘Ultimate’ version of Vista is mega expensive, but the Home Premium version is the same price as XP Pro is today, and you’ll probably just end up getting it when you upgrade to your next PC, by which time you’ll probably love Vista and won’t be able to wait to use it as your everyday PC.

If you’re not a Mac or Linux zealot, that is.

And as for the drivers issue, just about every version of Windows has had this problem, but it’s always been fixed pretty quickly, usually by the manufacturers whose product needs the drivers. With Vista effectively here, no manufacturer has any excuses. Tons of drivers are already here, with the ones that are missing either already in the RTM version, or on the way very, very soon.

2. Vista haters just don’t like Bill Gates.

Well, there’s not much we can do about that. You either like him or you don’t.

3. Vista haters say Vista is too expensive.

Yeah, well, I wish everything was cheaper. But everything comes at a price. Either pay it or go to Linux. No-one’s forcing you to buy Vista. If you want to stay in Amiga or Commodore 64 land, go right ahead. Or keep on using XP until the year 2010 for all I care, heck, go on using it until 2050.

4. Vista haters say it was late.

You know, there’s an old adage that says that if it wasn’t for the last minute, nothing would ever get done. Well, Microsoft has had a lot of last minutes, lately. Yes, it was delivered about three years late, but hey, better late than never. After using Vista for so long, I just can’t bring myself to go back to XP. It’s like finding a Windows 95 or 98 machine and trying to use it after years of using XP. Eeeeew!

Anyway, unless you’re some kind of anal neat on-time freak, how often do YOU get your stuff done on time? Thought so!

5. Vista haters are just jealous.

Yep, they’re just jealous of people like me who use Vista every day and love it, even though it’s the RC1 version I’m using which does have some glitches. Can’t wait to get the RTM version and see how much better it is, but already even in RC1 form I’m getting better performance than I ever got with XP.

Good luck, Vista haters. The chance to go into stores to see the object of your hate is coming soon. It’s an instore retail hating opportunity that’s not to be missed!

  2. D. says:

    1) We are talking about a new operating system not a windows Theme
    2) I do like Bill Gates it is amazing what he accomplished, I just don’t like his software
    3) Yes Vista is expensive for being just a windows Theme
    4) We don’t hate it because it was late… we are just curious what the hell where they doing for 5 years!!!!
    5) All benchmarks shows that XP is a faster operating system. What are we jealous of any way? Does Vista have something Mac of Linux or XP doesn’t have????

I wouldn’t be bother to write this at all, had it not been for the complete ignorance of the author of the article. I didn’t mind Vista when I first got it. People seldom do. It’s when you’ve been running it for a while and the bugs, lagging and all sorts of problems appear that people get pissed of. And rightly so.

I’ve used mac’s and I’m not convinced, Linux is to complicated for me. The most important reason for why I liked XP was that it actually worked 95% of the time. I’ve had so many hang-ups with Vista, that I’m kind of proud of myself for not throwing the computer through the window.

There’s probably loads of stuff I could do to make Vista run more smoothly, but I shouldn’t have to when I buy a OS from a company like Microsoft (one of the most well established company’s in the world).

There’s probably loads of Vista haters out there, but some of us have more than one actual good reason to be one.
