Netgear announced a recall this week of 82,000 ethernet adapters. The popular XE103 Powerline Ethernet Adapter was recalled once it was found to have issues with over heating leading to breakage and malfunctioning.
A Netgear spokesperson told [online news outlets] that local consumers are advised the recall applies both domestically and overseas, and the company estimates that of the 82,000 affected adaptors, around 2100 units have been sold in Australia.
The cause of the problem seemed to stem form the power source. Even though the units were designed to handle 220 – 240 V power, they over heated when plugged in to that type of power source. This created a danger and fire hazard for users of the adapter that Netgear decided to handle proactively.
Netgear will be offering free replacements for these adapters, and asks that users contact them immediately at their Australian office.
