Telstra says network did not cause death by bee

Telstra says network did not cause death by beeTelstra claims their new Next G network did not cause a farmer’s recent death by bee sting. How could Telstra have been responsible? When the man tried to use his mobile phone to call for help, he was unable to make the call.

The tragedy occurs at a time when Telstra is getting heat for their new Next G network’s reliability and coming under complaint for refusing access to its ADSL network for use by competing ISPs. The farmer’s name was Grahame Young. He was a member of the Merriwagga community, which has been registering complaints to fight the switch from CDMA to Next G from the beginning.

The farmers community is not the only one complaining that the new technology is just not as good as the older CDMA network. In fact, the government has received such a high number of complaints on the poor quality of Next G in rural areas that they have delayed the closure of the CDMA network by three months.

Community spokesman Brendan Appleby said:

“He [Young] tried to call the local hotel for help and he’s been unable to get through for 10 minutes,” Appleby said. “Ever since Grahame changed over he did nothing but complain about [the phone's] performance. He actually had taken it back into Telstra, who made a setting change in it, but the change they made, made no difference.”

A Telstra in house investigation of the coverage in the area declared it to be the same quality as CDMA. Community members disagree and have asked for an external investigation as well. Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has promised to keep CDMA open as a back up until he is satisfied the coverage is as good or better with Next G.
