In an attempt to help save African and Asian elephants from becoming extinct eBay has joined a growing list of companies that are refusing to sell ivory products. What triggered the ban of ivory products?
Ebay stated,
“We feel this is the best way to protect the endangered and protected species from which a significant portion of ivory products are derived.”
According to Reuters, the International Fund for Animal Welfare found more than 4,000 ivory items up for sale on Ebay. If you scan eBay for ivory products chances are you’ll run into several auctions featuring the product. The majority of the sales of ivory products are conducted on Ebay’s website based in the United States. The Humane Society of the United States along with the Humane Society International are two groups that actively campaign for better treatment of animals applauded the decision. Terra Telecky, policy director for the Humane Society International stated, “eBay’s decision was “commendable and should set an example for others.” Elephants tusks are used in a variety of decor products and traditional Chinese medicine.
eBay will start banning ivory products worldwide on January 1, 2009. However, antique items that contain small amounts of ivory can still be sold. If the antique item contains an excessive amount it sellers won’t be able to see it at eBay under the new polixy. Ivory can be found in numerous items one of the most popular are pianos. How does Ebay define an antique? According to eBay it has to be made before 1900. I have an antique upright grand piano that would fall under this description. Its keys are made out of ivory. It’s an heirloom so I have no intention of selling it on eBay.
It’s estimated that over 20,000 elephants are killed yearly for their ivory tusk, igniting a successful black-market industry. The buyer demand is high and makes this illegal activity not only tempting but extremely profitable for those who engage in this activity. I’ve been an eBay buyer and seller for years and have seen ivory products listed on the website I’m just surprised that it has taken them this long to reach this decision. eBay should be commended for its attempt to protect this endangered species. Hopefully, other companies will follow eBay’s lead and stop selling ivory products.
