What is the best free antivirus software?

What is the best free antivirus software People usually think of antivirus software after the fact, or after they’ve just been attacked with a virus.  When they go searching for the best one, free versions are always at the top of the list- but which ones are the best?  Which ones provide the greatest security while still being free of charge?

While it depends on your Web-surfing habits, most antivirus software will get the job done, but it all depends on the types of viruses the software will pick up on, as well as the frequency in which the “definitions list” is updated.  The definition list is the list of known viruses, malware, spyware, adware, etc. that the software will protect you against, the larger the list, the better the protection.  It’s important that the software recognizes everything from traditional attack viruses to ad-based spyware and malware, to trojans and beyond.  Some software will be good at protecting against one type of threat, but not any others.

In the market of freely available antivirus software, two names continue to get the most attention, and for good reason.  Avast! Antivirus and AVG Free Edition are the two main players who provide a wide-range of protection, constantly updated definitions lists and significant long-term protection without being overly resource-intensive.  Both Avast! and AVG are similar in nature and protect against everything from trojans to rootkit threats.  The largest advantage of both Avast! and AVG is the fact that they provide “real-time” protection, meaning the software running quietly in the background will notice and protect against anything malicious while you’re doing things like downloading P2P music, reading email and surfing the Web.  This is important because otherwise you’d have to scan your computer and various intervals to catch and fix any potential threats.

There’s plenty of options out there when searching for antivirus software, especially the free versions, but beware of many of them and lookout for the things mentioned above.  AVG and Avast! have been leaders in the segment for a long time, so at least compare features of any software you’re considering to make sure it stacks up and provides the same level of protection.

I use Avasyt and find it fantastic. Has saved me many times and it is not just antivirus but has up to 8 different protection modules for things like Outlook and internet mail, not to mention script running protection for Explorer and Firefox – this last one in particular is getting far more prevalent as a means for disrupting yopur surfing experience.
