School broadband rollout deadline may be missed
Broadband in schools in the subject of political mud slinging, as Liberals accuse Labor of failing to fulfill one of their election promises. Broadband in schools was intended as a compliment to the “one PC per desk” initiative, in which Labor declared that every student in years 9 through 12 would have access to a computer. Government officials have not officially responded to the allegations.

Open Source group builds free PCs for schools
Open Source advocates hold “installfests” all the time to help new Open Source users learn how to install and use Open Source programs on existing computer systems. Now one United States Open Source group has decided to take this helping hand to the next level by creating a combination installfest and buildfest to provide computers to schools.

UK tells schools not to upgrade to Microsoft Office or Vista
In the news this week, British schools have taken a clear stand against Microsoft’s new invasive software models, advising educators not to upgrade to Microsoft Vista or the newest Microsoft Office, Office 2007. The announcement came down this week from the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency.

One laptop per child project starts
Remember this project? Created by Nicholas Negroponte from MIT Labs, and supported by the UN, some governments and companies such as News Corporation and Google, the first 10 laptops have rolled off the production line at a cost of about US $150 each, not the US $100 price point originally envisaged.
