NBN an early failure, Conroy doesn’t care
As an advocate of the National Broadband Network (NBN) it’s heartening to see the first inner-city trial of the service being rolled out. But the take-up numbers are tiny, even though Communications Minister Stephen Conroy claims it’s all part of the plan and nothing to be concerned about.

Lamest reason for not having the NBN = Technology is bad!
There are many good arguments for and against the building of the NBN. There are also some lame ones, such as arguing that the money would be better spent encouraging us all to go outside more.

National Broadband Network in Freedom Of Information Controversy
Opposition parties are to challenge a government plan to exempt the National Broadband Network from freedom of information laws. The government says the exemption is needed to keep the network’s managing body from being “at a competitive disadvantage.”

Vic Labor wants NBN to be opt-out
In an interesting turn of events, the Victorian Labor party says that if they take the upcoming election, they will legislate that consumers would have to opt out of the NBN rather than opt in.
Australians prefer broadband to good schools, public transport
What would make for the perfect Australian suburb? Broadband and pay TV access, apparently, which both rank higher than good schools, public transport, and local businesses. A good result for NBN advocates, I feel.

Just 1 in 10 take up NBN offer
So far (which is not very far at all) only 10 percent of Australians who have been offered high-speed internet via NBN have availed themselves of the service, reopening the debate.

As if there wasn’t enough of a debate already raging about Australia’s broadband infrastructure, it transpires New Zealand is still far ahead in terms of speed.
